I met Paul at Crystal Palace when I was attending the Sports Injury Clinic. For some time I had been looking for a coach who could help me realize my full potential. Elitecycling seemed to fit the bill. In his down to earth manner Paul was able to provide me with a vision of what the future could hold. Elitecycling provide me with training schedules, preparation for events and is always keen to hear feed back and discuss the next step forward. I find Paul truly inspirational.
Before joining Paul I was totally unfocused, spending all my time on the bike in the belief that the more I did the better I would become. However since I have been with Paul he has motivated me to become focussed on my season goals through a well structured and tailored weekly training plan fitted around my work and family life in order to bring the best out of me at the right time. Judging by early season events my investment is paying off!
It has been great working with Paul over the last 4 months. He has helped me to really focus on the coming season and my training programme has helped me achieve a measurable improvement in a relatively short space of time. He is laid back in his approach, but at the same time also very motivational. This has given me the confidence to compete at a higher level and to raise my future performance goals. I would recommend him to cyclists of any level.
Thanks to Paul and his coaching skills and friendship I have been able to make the transition from a county standard marathon runner to age group winner at triathlon. He has a vast wealth of knowledge on his true passion, that of cycling. I have the pleasure of working with him at the Crystal Place Sports Injury Clinic, and have watched him coach first hand beginners and Elite level athletes but the main focus is the same for all, in that they are there to improve their ability but have a great time doing so.
Paul has been my coach and good friend for several years now, dragging and me through the winter months, whatever the weather – sounds bad… But we have had some great results, two national master's titles, and medals in the World and European masters track Championships. "Constant help and encouragement all the way, I wouldn't have missed a moment."
Quite simply Paul is an excellent personal coach, not just an experienced athlete on the other end of a computer terminal cranking out cut & paste schedules. I met Paul in the summer of 2009, after I had struggled through Ironman Lanzarote in 14hrs 20mins. Over the summer months Paul transformed my cycling .He created a tailor-made, individual programme and took the time to understand my physiology, my ability to recover, family-time pressures and the type of training that I needed to do. The purpose & intensity of each session was explained, as well its position in the overall plan. I progressed very quickly and with a perfectly timed taper, I was overwhelmed with a time of 11hrs 46mins, at Challenge Barcelona IM distance tri, just 3 months later in Oct 2009. What differentiates Paul from other coaches (apart from his extensive knowledge and real understanding of the science behind successful endurance training), is his focus on the individual. He took the time to ride & run with me, understand my physiology, motivations, ability to recover, and created a truly personal training plan. Sure Paul expects hard-work (and some !) but he's also prepared to put himself out to help you achieve your goals. How many coaches would endure a 4am start on a bank holiday weekend to accompany you on 125 mile training ride to ensure the correct tempo? I cannot recommend Paul highly enough. If you are thinking of spending any money on improving your times, new bike or aero wheels, think again, call Paul Mill and transform your performance
Paul joined Les Veloistes Gentils for our recent ride across the Alps. We were a big group of mixed ability, both of which made things challenging for Paul, not least because he had to get around a group that was often strung out over kilometres of mountainside! Paul's skill in quietly assessing everyone's level meant that he was able to offer relevant and useful advice across the group, whether related to more efficient climbing, safer and faster descending or riding effectively in a group. I've certainly returned from the trip a far better cyclist than I was beforehand.
I had a great race on Sunday, despite the hills and the heat! Finished in 11hrs 41mins which is nearly an hour faster than my IMUK time and was 5th in my age group. Needless to say, I am thrilled as well as amazed! Thanks so much for all the coaching in Gran Canaria, advice on the bike was invaluable and whilst I am still a bit slow on the descents (and ascents) and there is much work still to be done, I was definitely much more confident than I would have otherwise been.
I initially met Paul at Elite Cycling earlier this year for a Bike Fitting session after he had sorted a couple of friends positions out on their bike. His advice and knowledge immediately puts you at ease. After the bike fitting I was in a much faster, comfortable and more powerful position. Now I had a great position but I wanted to achieve more in regards to performance and race times. After discussing my goals for the season, Paul defined those needs and goals so you can achieve them with a completely tailored programme. The training programme makes you work hard but with a training schedule to obtain results but with the emphasis on quality so you can also have a balance with work and home life. Paul helps to make your goals achievable. For me I wanted to improve my Time Trial skills and of Course Times, mid season and I have PBs already in a 25 and 10 TT. It is also an added bonus that Paul knows all the TT Courses through his own racing so he can discuss the course and go through them with you, a truly bespoke service. Although whatever cycling I do, I want to become a better rider and consistently striving to improve, with Paul s knowledge and straight forward coaching approach that is what is happening, results speak for themselves.
Having been inspired by a friend's London-Beijing ride in 2008 (where the sole purpose was to arrive in time for the Olympic Games) I decided I needed to put the running to one side for 12 months, buy a touring bike, panniers, get bike fit & book 3-weeks off work for my version of this epic challenge: LA to New York, solo, unsupported in less than 3 weeks. Being far from a 'club rider' my knowledge was lacking when it came to my new bike set up. With months of bitter winter riding in the bank & niggles here and there it was clear I needed an expert to help fit me 'perfectly' to the bike I'd be spending 16 hrs a day in the saddle of. A contact at my local bike store recommended Paul, without a shadow of doubt, the best decision I made in the run up to the adventure. The video analysis reworked my position on the bike, helped me feel more natural and relieved what had been unnecessary knee & arm fatigue. Had it not been for Paul's expert equipment & rich knowledge there would have been little chance of making it from California to New York a day earlier than planned. Don't hesitate, book your slot. You won't regret it LA to New York (April 2011)
I was training for my record-breaking expedition and suffering from loads of pain and my progress was slow. My physiotherapist recommended me to see Paul Mill. When I walked into Elite Cycling I had no idea that Paul will become my manager and bring me to the level that I could smash the World Record. Crossing the monotonous Sahara and being mentally focus to do average 100miles a day is a psychological challenge as well as being a physical challenge. Paul’s training sessions targeted both elements. Also my training plan was designed to fit my busy day-to-day life. Paul also worked with me in a consultancy role for my cycling equipment, bike fitting and helped me with my nutrition needs. His passion, energy, knowledge and experience played a very important role in my training. Towards the end of the training I knew the record was mine.
Paul's advice and coaching was a key part of me completing the Etape Part 2 this year. He developed a training programme that worked for me and was realistic in the context of my work and personal commitments. Having only got my bike in January it was a steep learning curve to get to the start of the Etape in 6 months and face the climbs and down hills of the Aubisque, Tourmalet, Aspin and Peyresourde. By working with Paul I was as prepared as possible to face the challenge and was very proud to be one of less than 50% of starters who completed the event. Paul was always very quick to respond to any queries I had and provided invaluable advice for not only training and techniques on the bike but also nutrition and health and fitness.
I have known Paul professionally and personally for over 2 years now. As a former athlete himself, his extensive experience in both triathlon and cycling means that he fully understands both the mental and physical aspects of training and racing. He will tailor a programme that works for you and your lifestyle but most importantly he will inspire you to train smart, recover well and achieve your sporting goals. I can assure you that your physical limits will be tested but his calm, honest and constructive approach make him a pleasure to work with. Paul can provide a week to week training guide with software that is easy to understand and utilise. He is thorough in his application, leaving no aspect uncovered. He is also available for regular 1:1 training sessions where he actually rides with you so he knows exactly how you are doing. His very practical, hands on approach make him one of the best personal trainers around. Paul has also been actively involved in the cycle coaching at our local triathlon club, Premier Tri. These sessions are always expertly planned and executed. He is able to pitch and adapt the level to make it appropriate for all levels of experience and most importantly he is approachable, informative and motivating. I would not hesitate in recommending his services to anyone who is willing to work hard and get stuck into some training that will undoubtedly get you to achieve those goals you never thought you could.
I first approached Paul for coaching after several recommendations and I have now been using his service at Elite Cycling for the past year. My focus is Time Trialling and my knowledge of Paul gained from other riders, the Elite Cycling Website, and his own history as a racing cyclist, led me to believe he would be able to give me the right programme and support. My very first informal meeting with him easily confirmed that this would be the case. I can say after twelve months that not only has my Time Trialling improved tremendously, my whole approach to riding and racing has benefitted immeasurably from the close and professional way in which the years coaching has developed. Not only have I fulfilled many of my seasons goals, which Paul and I set at the start of the year, I now relish the next season and the chance, with Elite Cycling's help, to improve further and raise my own expectations of success. It is undoubtedly Paul’s belief in my ability to achieve these goals coupled with his great knowledge of coaching that has given me the assurance that by following my individually tailored plan, great results will follow.
Paul Mill is one of those rare coaches who not only understand the technical and physiological aspects of coaching, he also grasps psychology and how to maximise this to enable individuals to achieve their full potential. Even in a group setting, Paul has a great ability to very quickly judge each individuals ability and how to get the best from them; from nurturing someone back following major surgery (and understanding how frustrating this is for an athlete to go through), to pushing the highly competitive athletes in our club to the max. This is an amazing skill, especially in a group setting. On the technical side, I had a bike fitting with Paul, which thankfully he complemented with appropriate exercises to get use to the more aggressive position. The nice surprise was the added 2-3km per hour to my average speed. Most importantly, as Aussies would say, he’s a great bloke
October 20th I came to Phuket to train for an Ironman. The hills were brutal and I came home scared. I was referred to Paul Mill and in three weeks he got me ready mentally and physically. December 2nd I just completed my first ironman and the hills were conquered. Thank you Paul for helping me overcome my fear and for being a great coach. His advice both from a physical and mental perspective was invaluable both on and off the bike. He also helped me through planning my nutrition both before during and after the event.
I recently started getting into the sport of triathlon and this season really wanted to improve my times and gain confidence. However, I had been struggling to find time to fit training into my busy work schedule and was getting frustrated by my lack of progress. I knew I needed to get some structure into my routine but did not know where to start. I remember when I first contacted Paul I had asked him if he also worked with ‘recreational’ level athletes as I had associated personal coaching with a certain calibre of athlete, and did not think I quite fit that profile. He assured me that it was just as important for someone like myself, and after discussing my personal goals for the near and long term and reviewing my schedule Paul quickly had me up and running on my very own coaching plan. This was the motivation that I needed to make training a priority. I have been working with Paul for the last 3 months and I have seen HUGE progress – I have not only significantly bettered my times across the board but have also surprised myself with some great race performances. The advice, feedback and motivation has been invaluable and the benefits are easily measurable. I can highly recommend Paul’s coaching to any athlete at any level and I guarantee that you will end up setting even higher goals for yourself as you accomplish the initial ones you had in mind at the outset.
My husband and I signed up to do 10 sessions at the Elitecycling winter 2012, because of work, family and weather conditions it was so hard to go on a decent ride. I am just so delighted how these sessions went. Not only kept me fit enough to go back in spring with my fit cycling group to do 70-80 miles ride without suffering but was also I was often sitting on the front. The sessions were very hard and varied, unbelievable - but covering all aspects of terrain and racing situations. Paul and Glenn were there all the way to make sure that you weren't slacking and playing good music to suffer to. I'm not used to pushing myself (not that I was aware of this before) but now I know I can. Not only did my body respond to the training but my mind also - I don't give up so easily and can hear Paul's instructions in my head even now 3 months after I finished my sessions. Most bikes fit on the turbo's, even with mud guards - so not a problem to ride there even on wet winter night. Thank you Paul and Glenn for giving me more confidence to try.
I met Paul at a time in my life, when I knew where I wanted to be but did not have the confidence and drive to get there. I remember the first meeting we had, and he really took the time to analyse my goals; it was so refreshing. He has been my coach for 4 months, and in that time he has made me believe that in myself and I have seen a transformation in my strength, body and mind to pursue my dream in competing on the track. His personal approach towards my progress is truly inspirational, as he takes time to know you as an individual and a rider.
Although I only attended 3/4 of your sessions I picked up some very useful tips and this has made a difference to my 25 miles bike times in the Olympic distance Triathlons. I have recently come back from the European triathlon champs in Turkey with a Bronze medal. My bike split was the fastest in my age group and some of the younger age groups too! I have also knocked off 1.14 minutes off a 25TT (1.07.23) a pb for me! Hope to do some more sessions soon.
This is my second incarnation as a cyclist, having raced a bit as a teenager in the late 90's. When I returned to the sport six years ago, I quickly read up on the latest sports science and training ideas, before beginning to plan my own training schedule. However, despite having a decent armoury of experience and knowledge to draw on, it became clear that I was unable to effectively manage my training alongside a busy work and personal life. The result was a mixture of under-training, over training and demotivation, as I struggled to plan my cycling and hit the targets I set myself. I began to feel that cycling would not repay the effort I invested in it. I began working with Paul about eight months ago; he provides me with a structured training programme that reflects my time restrictions, strengths and weaknesses. This plan is easily accessible via daily emails and on-line at Training Peaks, but Paul is always available to answer queries by email, phone and even twitter. Having sessions planned by Paul has greatly improved the quality and variety of my training, so that boredom and repetition are not a problem. This year should have been my worst since returning to cycling as a broken arm, personal problems and a heavy work schedule have all interrupted my plans for the season. However, with Paul's support I have just produced my best ever Etape performance (my 5th ride in the event) and I am now on track to recover my racing form for the end of the season. I have had every excuse not to perform this year, but with Paul's support I appear to be getting better with age! In the past I had scoffed at the thought of average cyclists (such as me) using a coach. However, Paul enables me to focus on riding my bike, rather than worrying about whether I am training properly. With Paul I know I'm doing the rights things at the right time, so that I ride better and enjoy my cycling more. Greg Lemond once said "It doesn't get easier, you just go faster", but the fact is that cycling is a lot more fun when you do it quickly!
I started training with Paul last year in November and within 5 month of training with him I improved more than in the whole of the previous year. In my TTs I am improving my PB with almost every TT I am doing, having improved my PB on 10m by about 2:30 minutes and on 25m by 5:20 minutes compared to last year so far. But Paul delivers much more than a training plan. He helped me to develop from a rider who is afraid of riding in groups to one being comfortable to race in a tight bunch. Paul motivates at times of doubt, praises at times of success and provides advice in moments of uncertainty.
I thought I have the experience of pushing myself hard in training, I was so wrong! You don’t know your limits until you have a chance to be coached by Paul. His one-to-one sessions are hard, but so rewarding. The training plans provided by Paul are structured, accessible and appropriate for my abilities. He also informs you why you are doing the sessions and the benefits of doing them. This is highly motivational, as you know where you are going. In less than one year being supported by Paul, I improved my PB in Olympic distance triathlon by 10 minutes, which mainly came from the bike. This could not have come at a better time, as my best time came when competing for GB Age Group at the European Championships.
Paul has made it possible for me to fit in training and racing on my bike with: being Head of Department at School, three active children and x-country running in the winter. I have thoroughly enjoyed the training peaks training programme system, never a dull moment! My main aim for the season was to medal at the Masters' Track Champs, which I did, twice! I have also enjoyed being able to support the rest of the girls in my team by counting in one of the Womens Team series events and at least two of the LWCRL events. A really enjoyable year! thanks, Paul!
I contacted Paul via a recommendation from my local bike shop,Balfe's Bikes, whilst feeling a bit anxious about the coming cycling season. No winter training (again), 3 years into membership of a cycle club, aged 46, female with steadily decreasing motivation. What to do...? Paul put me on a bike, connected some data gadgets and told me I was an "exciting project, 'cos you don't yet know what you're going to be good at mate." The HR zones and programme arrived, I logged on with the only instruction for the next 6 weeks being to "find out what you enjoy". Three months later I've got a track bike and go to derny training at Herne Hill velodrome, done a track event, 4 crits, 1 sportive and 2 time trials with a few more (but not too much!) booked in for the rest of the season. I can honestly say that hooking up with Paul has not only boosted my confidence to take part but I can really see the physical difference. The plan is totally realistic and therefore sustainable. Do I enjoy it? Yes I do.
Some people invest money into the latest kit: the lightest bike, the deepset wheels, the newest Lycra. Forgetting about investing in the most important part - themselves. I've been working with Paul for just over a year now and I can honestly say I haven't come across a coach who is more dedicated, reliable, understanding and motivational as Paul. Not only this but he know how to get results. I began my race career falling off the back of the bunch feeling quite demoralised. Which was a stark reality to the end of my first season with Paul when I found myself up there attacking and sitting in with the best of them. I have been unfortunate enough to experience two serious injuries and Paul had always been very sympathetic and mindful of this. He finds ways to still train hard and achieve results even at your lowest. My lifestyle, like many people nowadays, is increasingly busy which invariably reduces the amount of time you can dedicate to training. Therefore every ride needs to count. With Paul's structured, tailor-made training plans each session has a purpose helping you to achieve your goals and we have great fun whilst doing it, which is what Elitecycling is all about.
