If you have ever walked into a gym and seen a row of bikes with music playing, a big screen at the front and a room full of people pedalling hard, you have probably experienced a spin class.

But what if you are a cyclist who wants more than simply getting hot, sweaty and tired?

What if you want to improve your cycling performance, develop your aerobic fitness, increase your power, improve your cadence and understand exactly why you are doing each part of a session?

That is where TURBO BEAT with Velocity is different.

Spin is fitness. TURBO BEAT is cycling coaching.

Spin is primarily a fitness industry tool. It provides an energetic environment where participants can exercise, burn calories and improve general cardiovascular fitness.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that if general fitness is your objective.

But cycling performance requires more than simply pedalling harder.

At TURBO BEAT, every session is designed around the principles of cycling performance and delivered by a cycling coach.

I am Paul Mill, founder of elitecycling and an experienced cycling coach, and I lead the sessions. Rather than simply standing at the front of a class and telling you when to increase your effort, I take you through a structured training session designed for a specific purpose.

That purpose can change from session to session.

Training different energy systems

Cycling performance depends on your ability to produce and sustain different types of effort.

That means your training needs to develop different physiological adaptations.

A TURBO BEAT session might concentrate on aerobic development, endurance, tempo, threshold, VO2 max, sprinting, strength or neuromuscular adaptation.

For example, one session may involve controlled aerobic work where the objective is to build endurance and develop your ability to ride efficiently for longer.

Another may introduce sustained threshold efforts designed to improve your ability to maintain a high percentage of your functional threshold power.

Another could involve short, high intensity efforts designed to challenge your VO2 max.

You may also work on cadence, pedalling technique, standing efforts, gear selection or neuromuscular power.

The important difference is that the session has a training objective.

You are not simply riding a bike.

You are training a particular aspect of your cycling.

This is where Velocity changes everything

TURBO BEAT is delivered through VQ Velocity, which adds another dimension to the coaching experience.

Velocity allows your cycling data to be brought into the session in real time, including Power, Heart Rate and Cadence.

That means I can coach the session while also seeing what you are actually doing.

If the workout asks you to ride at a particular power or cadence, the target is displayed and your data can be monitored against it.

This is particularly useful when we are working within specific training zones.

You might be asked to hold a particular intensity for several minutes.

Instead of simply hearing me say, "keep going", Velocity helps you see whether you are actually where you need to be.

Keep the dials green

One of the great features of Velocity is the visual feedback.

During a session you will see your targets and your performance represented on the screen. The objective is often to keep the relevant dials within the designated zone, keeping them green.

This might sound simple, but it changes the way you train.

Rather than guessing your intensity, you have immediate feedback.

Are you riding too hard?

Are you below the required power?

Is your cadence dropping?

Is your heart rate responding as expected?

The information is there in front of you.

And I am there to coach you through it.

That combination of technology and human coaching is what makes TURBO BEAT different.

The coach is still the most important part

Technology is incredibly useful, but technology alone does not coach you.

A screen can show you a number.

A coach explains what that number means and what you should do with it.

During TURBO BEAT sessions I can guide you through the workout, explain the purpose of the effort, encourage you when the intensity increases and help you understand how the session fits into your wider cycling development.

You are not simply following an animated workout.

You are training with a coach.

There is also a live two way element to the sessions, allowing riders to see and hear the coach and train together as a group.

That group environment creates another important training benefit: accountability.

When you know the session is starting at a particular time and that your coach and other riders are there, it becomes much easier to stay committed.

From beginner to experienced cyclist

You do not have to be a racing cyclist to benefit from TURBO BEAT.

The sessions are suitable for riders with different levels of experience because the training targets can be based around your own performance data.

For a newer cyclist, the structure and coaching can provide clear guidance about how to train.

For an experienced cyclist, the same environment provides the opportunity to work precisely within specific power, heart rate and cadence targets.

The objective is not simply to see who can produce the biggest number.

It is about executing the session correctly.

Velocity's approach can reward accuracy and execution rather than simply rewarding the rider who produces the most power.

So, what is the real difference?

The simplest way to explain it is this:

Spin asks you to exercise.

TURBO BEAT asks you to train.

Spin can provide music, motivation and a great workout.

TURBO BEAT combines those elements with structured cycling sessions, performance data, specific training objectives and, most importantly, coaching.

Every session has a reason.

Every effort has a purpose.

Every zone has a place within the workout.

And with Velocity, you can see your performance in real time while I coach you through the session.
